Speech dysfluency, commonly known as stuttering, is a complex speech disorder that affects the fluency of speech. Although it is called "speech disorder" in the literature, it is a complex problem that has its roots in language development in early childhood, manifests itself at the speech level, and negatively affects all communication in a multidimensional way. The exact cause of speech disfluency is not fully understood, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of the following factors.

1. Genetics: Although not always, speech disfluency can be a condition seen frequently among family members, which suggests that speech disfluency may have a genetic aspect. Some genetic mutations are thought to be associated with speech disfluency. However, since studies in this field are ongoing and we do not have definitive findings, we need to approach cautiously.

2. Neurophysiology: Differences in the brain's language and speech processing phases are thought to be one of the factors leading to stuttering/speech disfluency. Brain imaging studies have shown that people with stuttering/disfluency may have differences in the areas of the brain responsible for speech production.

3. Developmental Factors: Stuttering/speech dysfluency often begins in childhood and is more common in boys than girls. Developmental delays, late or very early onset of speech, or other speech and language disorders may also be associated with stuttering/disfluency.

4. Environmental Factors: Stressful situations, rapid speech development, qualitatively and quantitatively challenging communication environments, or high expectations of parents can sometimes trigger or aggravate stuttering/speech disfluency in children who are prone to this condition.

5. Psychological Factors: Although stuttering/speech disfluency is not of psychological origin, stress, anxiety and pressure can worsen stuttering/speech disfluency. People with stuttering/disfluency may develop anxiety about speaking, which can perpetuate the stuttering/speech disfluency cycle.

As mentioned above, stuttering/speech disfluency is a challenging and dynamic condition that affects a person's life in multidimensional ways from an early age. This condition, which begins at an early age, makes life difficult for the person, reduces well-being, and prevents the person from realizing his potential. Therefore, stuttering/speech disfluency is a problem that must be addressed meticulously and seriously. Stuttering/speech disfluency should be addressed by speech and language therapists who specialize in stuttering/speech disfluency and have serious knowledge and experience of this speech problem.
